Description: As the global population ages, as technology, devices, and laws change, and as more systems stand poised to crawl, index, aggregate, and translate our digital content, accessibility becomes increasingly important.

This hands-on tutorial will help you develop a framework for understanding the key principles of accessibility and universal usability. Such that no matter what the technology, platform, or device, you will know which questions to ask, and what to look for from a content, functionality, and semantic markup perspective. This framework will also help you evaluate the recommendations you might make for fixing issues that you will identify within this tutorial.

Biography:

Marguerite “Margy” Bergel is a Principal Accessibility/Usability Champion at Fidelity Investments, where she is part of Fidelity's User Experience Design team and oversees Fidelity's Web Accessibility program. She researches and presents on web accessibility research and universal design topics at conferences like CSUN, CHI, HCII, UPA, and World Usability Day. She has numerous publications in the field, teaches at the John Slatin AccessU Web Accessibility Conference, and at Bentley University. She received her B.A. in Art from UMass Boston and wishes to thank Boston's Visually Impaired/Blind Users' Group, who taught her much of what she knows about applied Web accessibility.

Ann Chadwick-Dias is Director of User Experience Research at Fidelity Investments where she is part of Fidelity's User Experience Design team. She received her B.S. with a Bio-Behavioral concentration from UMass/Boston and an M.A. in Technical Communication from Northeastern University. She lead a corporate-wide accessibility initiative at Fidelity Investments, and presents on universal usability at conferences including UPA, CHI, CUU, Boston IA, Boston UPA, HCII, and CSUN. She also teaches at the John Slatin AccessU Web Accessibility Conference, and at Bentley University. She has 15+ years of research experience with journal publications in fields including human-computer interaction, psychobiology, and psycholinguistics.
