To create great design you need to understand how your users do their work. You can do that using CARD, a collaborative method that gets your team on the same page about your user's workflow. Apply it to desktop, web, or mobile apps. You'll jump in & map a user's workflow using CARD, identify their pains & ideas to address them, design an improved workflow, & plan for CARD using your own projects. New to task analysis? Biography:
Len Conte has worked in the software industry for over 30 years as a programmer, systems analyst, knowledge engineer and usability specialist. He has designed industrial strength systems for Pepsi-Cola, Columbia Broadcasting Systems, Dun & Bradstreet Software, Information Resources Inc., BMC Software and most recently, MathWorks. While at MathWorks over the last 7 years, Len has led efforts to improve workflows for, and user interactions with, a variety of Simulink products. Len’s expertise is in workflow analysis, usability testing, and persona development. He also serves as a CARD coach and mentor to the entire MathWorks User Experience group.
Mark Ainscow is a team lead in the MathWorks User Experience group. He began life as a software developer in the field of statistical genetics and for the last ten years has worked at improving customers’ user-experience in a highly technical domain-space. He has an M.S. in Human Factors in Information Design from Bentley College and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Coventry University in the UK. He works collaboratively to construct workflows and use cases within cross-functional teams, with and without external customers.
Debbie Cook is currently a manager in the MathWorks User Experience group. She’s been employing user-centered design for many years (even before she knew that’s what it was called). For the last 6 years, she’s provided UCD support to software development teams at MathWorks. Previously, she worked as a Project Manager at Bloomberg L.P. where she led a team of UX professionals and programmers tasked with designing and delivering internal software applications. She has an MS in Human Factors in Information Design and an MBA from Bentley College and a B.S. in Business Management from The College of New Jersey.
Stephen Reinach has 19 years of human factors and usability experience. He works collaboratively with different software development teams to identify product requirements and create and enhance product designs for Simulink’s simulation and code generation products. While he uses a number of different user-centered design tools, he considers the CARD method to be his Ace up his sleeve. Before joining MathWorks in 2008, Stephen was Senior Engineer at QinetiQ North America, conducting transportation safety and human factors research. Stephen has an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and a B.A. in psychology.
Lissa Story manages a team of user experience specialists working on web projects at MathWorks. Her 18 years of usability experience ranges from web sites and mobile applications to Nuance’s speech recognition software to Microsoft Money. Lissa has been working on mobile UI design since 2009. She has a BFA and a master’s degree in Technical and Professional Communication with a focus on UI design.
