Description:
Online five-second testing tools promise valuable response data that that can inform UX designs, but that value can be compromised by ignoring the restrictions of the method and designing the tests accordingly.
An analysis of more than 300 "crowdsourced" five-second tests showed that most tests are designed to encourage responses like "I don't recall" or "I cannot answer this".
From this analysis, rules and guidelines were developed and tested to increase the likelihood of obtaining useful data.

Paul Doncaster is a Senior User Experience Designer for Thomson CompuMark, a company of Thomson Reuters specializing in trademark research solutions. He graduated with distinction from Bentley University’s Human Factors in Information Design masters degree program in 2007, and has since worked on highly-complex UX projects within the domains of course technology, legal and intellectual property. He has written and spoken on many UX topics, including designing for emotional response, online readability, and designing for tablet users in the legal domain.
