Description:
This workshop will explore observational note-taking during usability testing, offering guidance and tips for improvement, and collaboratively attempting to formulate best practices. We will conduct interactive exercises where the attendees view usability test session video clips from the perspective of a note-taker. After each clip, we will discuss what was important and what wasn’t important to note regarding the participant’s behavior and comments. Attendees will have the opportunity to share their own opinions and note-taking experiences. We will illustrate the skills and planning necessary for effective note-taking during testing, and discuss the pros and cons of various note-taking approaches.

Biography:
Kristen Davis is a usability specialist at UserWorks with experience in usability testing and other forms of user experience research. She has a master’s degree in Information Technology with a concentration in Human Factors from Bentley University. She has over seven years of experience with various forms of usability evaluation methods including heuristic evaluation, accessibility reviews, card sorting activities, and various types of user interviews in addition to usability testing. Kristen has experience in visual design and system development, having developed functional prototypes. She has been involved in various projects for clients in government, the private sector, and non-profits.
Dick Horst is an experimental psychologist and human factors engineer with over 30 years’ experience in applied behavioral research, systems development, and usability engineering. He is the founder and President of UserWorks, Inc., a usability engineering consulting firm in the Washington, DC area. Dick has conducted or overseen hundreds of usability testing projects for organizations in government, the private sector, non-profits, and academia. He has a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Carnegie-Mellon University and is a board-certified professional ergonomist.
