Description: This tutorial will provide lectures and hands-on exercises to help you learn how visual design can reinforce web and mobile app usability best practices, as well create interfaces that people value. You’ll learn when and how to use a grid; how to make decisions about selecting fonts, colors, imagery, and UI control styles that convey the appropriate personality for an app; and how to develop an overall rationale for design decisions that supports current and future choices about application appearance and use.

Biography:

Deborah A. Levinson is a user interface designer with over sixteen years of expertise helping designers, engineers, and communications professionals find common ground and build successful digital applications. She and Tania Schlatter co-own Nimble Partners, a Boston-area user experience and user interface design firm, and are the co-authors of 'Visual Usability: Principles and Practices for Designing Digital Applications' (Morgan Kaufmann, July 2013).A former webmaster for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Deborah is also a coauthor of 'The MIT Guide to Teaching Website Design' (MIT Press, April 2001).

Tania Schlatter’s design approach combines user-centered and visual design techniques from formal study and twenty years of practice. She has an M.Des. in human-centered communication design from the Institute of Design in Chicago, studied with Paul Rand and Armin Hofmann in Switzerland, and has a BFA in graphic design from Boston University. She teaches interactive information design to graduate students at Northeastern University.She and Deborah Levinson co-own Nimble Partners, a Boston-area user experience design firm, and are the co-authors of 'Visual Usability: Principles and Practices for Designing Digital Applications' (Morgan Kaufmann, July 2013).
